Asian-Black Solidarity Project
On February 1st, our member health centers Asian Health Services (AHS) and Baywell Health (formerly West Oakland Health) hosted a joint food distribution as part of their Asian-Black Solidarity project.
This was a joint celebration of Lunar New Year and Black History Month. The idea came to fruition after a series of joint interviews and focus groups were conducted with their respective communities.
During these interviews, they heard that there is a need for more shared space for our Asian and Black communities as well as other communities to come together. There was a desire to connect and learn about each other’s cultures and history. Food distribution sites were identified as an important space where there was a desire to have more solidarity among our communities. There were speakers from both AHS and WOH, cultural performances and blessings from faith leaders. Over 260 families were provided with food that day.
