Motivational Interviewing: A Client-Centered Communication &
Behavior Change Approach
Trainer: Steven Malcolm Berg-Smith, MS, CWP, MINT certified
This intensive training will introduce participants to the theory, principles, and skills of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and related motivation-enhancing behavior change approaches. Participants will be guided through a sequence of learning activities to explore and shape counseling practice behavior with clients, and to initiate a process for developing proficiency in MI. Learning activities will include: real-life demonstrations, videotape examples, “real-plays”, small group exercises, and participant practice with feedback.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify and practice the key method, principles and skills of Motivational Interviewing;
2. Demonstrate how MI skills are utilized to enhance behavior change and;
3. Apply the clinical tasks for each stage of the “Stages of Change” model;
